Chief Financial Officer
Mark Heffernan comes to mothers2mothers with an extensive background in the financial and strategic management of non-profit, commercial, and academic organizations. He has over 25 years of experience working on international development programs, with a particular emphasis on the support of global health programs. His expertise includes the financial management of both private and federal funding, including grants, cooperative agreements, and commercial contracts. Mark has performed numerous consulting engagements in support of various HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs, including several of the largest recipients of PEPFAR and other funding from USAID, the Centers for Disease Control, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank and other donor organizations. Prior to his consulting work, Mark was the Vice President of Finance and Administration for JHPIEGO, where he oversaw financial strategy, management and international operations for more than $200 million dollars of global cooperative agreements in Africa, Asia, and Latin America for the Johns Hopkins University affiliate. Mark is also a former entrepreneur with experience in the start-up of three successful companies, ranging from a technical services company providing support to USAID-funded development programs to a software company in the field of identity management and IT security. He began his overseas career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chad and spent seven years living and working in Central Africa in support of a variety of international development programs. Mark holds an MBA from the Wharton School and obtained his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He is a Certified Public Accountant. |
