No baby should be born with HIV - and no mother should be powerless to protect her health and the lives of her children.
mothers2mothers is an organization founded in 2001 to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and sustain the long--term health of women and new mothers living with HIV.
Mother-to-child transmission of HIV is almost entirely preventable. Yet in sub-Saharan Africa - where 90 percent of the world's pregnant women with HIV live - every day 1000 children are born with HIV - compared with one a day in the U.S. and Europe. Without treatment, half of them will die before the age of 2. AIDS-related illnesses are also the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age.
The mothers2mothers approach is simple and effective: we employ and train mothers living with HIV to work alongside doctors and nurses, bringing critical information and support to pregnant women and new mothers with HIV. These "Mentor Mothers" have gone through prevention of mother-to-child transmission programs themselves, They are trained as peer educators and role models, educating pregnant women with HIV on how to keep themselves healthy and what steps they can take to have a healthy, HIV-free baby.

Whether you're a mom, mum, madre, maman, mamma, mater, okaasan, mutter, or mzazi, all mothers share something in common - the unconditional love for their children. mothers2mothers is asking you to extend that love to new mothers in Africa, whom we support and educate to ensure that they have healthy pregnancies, healthy babies, and stay alive to take care of themselves and their families.

As you celebrate a new life, you can help save a life and allow mothers in Africa to also celebrate their newborns. So whether you host an in-person baby shower or a virtual one, whether you're pregnant or have already had your child, you can make a difference! You don't even need to be pregnant - you can just gather your friends to celebrate motherhood and support the mothers and babies mothers2mothers works with.
