Dr. Ariberto Fassati will present an overview of the current AIDS epidemic.  Learn about the origin of HIV, prevention of transmission, treatment of infection and the most recent developments in pursuit of an effective vaccine. 

Dr. Ariberto Fassati is Director of the Wohl Virion Centre in the Division of Infection and Immunity at UCL, an Associate Editor of Retrovirology and a faculty member of Faculty 1000 Medicine. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Milan and is a board certified neurologist. He obtained a PhD from UMDS Guy's Hospital and was awarded a Wellcome Trust Prize International fellowship to work at Columbia University. Dr. Fassati returned to the UK in 1999 to work in Robin Weiss's group at UCL, he was awarded a Wellcome Trust Career Development fellowship in 2000 and a Wellcome Trust University Award in 2004. He is a Reader in Cellular & Molecular Virology.

Dr. Fassati's interest in retroviruses and HIV-1 started in the late 1990s. He has worked on the molecular aspects of HIV-1 replication and on the interactions between the host cell and the virus. With a large grant from the MRC, Dr. Fassati is now performing high through put screenings to find new drug targets and new broadly cross-neutralizing antibodies against HIV-1.
