Music to Our Ears
After attending the first mothers2mothers friend-raiser in Los Angeles last autumn, a deep chord was struck in music teacher Stephen Calipari about mothers2mothers’ role in the fights against HIV/AIDS.  He was determined to do something more far-reaching than a personal donation, and enlisted his music students to raise funds for the organization.  Participation and support was overwhelming, as one young songwriter sang: "How many lives are you willing to save? How many eyes will open due to bravery? And I won't sit idly by while an innocent mother loses a child? Her angel. An angel. Save an angel tonight"

Realizing that his students could be an untapped resource for m2m, he decided to turn their passion for music into passion for mothers and their babies half a world away.  But why stop there?  In fact, why not harness the power of music among music teachers and their students across America?  Armed with a good idea and boundless enthusiasm, Stephen created musicians4mothers2mothers, an endeavor that would mobilize musicians and music teachers from all over the U.S. to support mothers2mothers by organizing their peers, their students and themselves into a fundraising force.

For his pilot fundraiser on April 5th, Stephen enlisted his students, ranging from ages six to 20 and their families, and the result was a concert that created pride - not only in their musical achievements, but in the difference their contribution could make in the lives of families in southern Africa.

With the participation of 26 students sponsored by their friends and families, as well as m2m’s founders Robin Smalley and Mitch Besser, over $6,000 was raised.  In an amazing cadence of hope and pride, the musicians filled the room with a spirit of solidarity in helping mothers to save babies.  Ultimately, it was the song-writing sensitivity of one young performer, Rachel Eskenazi-Gold, whose lovely voice expressed the feelings of all involved…

"How many lives are you willing to save?
How many eyes will open due to bravery?
And I won't sit idly by while an innocent mother loses a child
Her angel. An angel.
Save an angel tonight"

Stephen's dearest hope is that teachers and musicians all over the world will pick up the baton and join musicians4mothers2mothers, by holding similar events in their communities.  For more information, contact Nina Girvetz at: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
