Babalwa Mbono was once a client at m2m, and then became a mentor. She counseled and educated groups of women on HIV/AIDS prevention and went on to become a Site Coordinator, visiting the White House on more than one occasion to share her incredible story. Recognised for her powerful ability to teach, Babalwa was promoted to the position of junior trainer. |

On December 1st, World AIDS Day, President Bush was presented with the first "International Medal of PEACE" from the Global PEACE Coalition in recognition of his unprecedented contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS. In a UN Radio podcast, m2m's Dr Mitch Besser sat on a panel of three experts
on a discussion focused on “supporting and protecting mothers living
with HIV” – members of the panel included Nazneen Damji, a
UNIFEM programme specialist on gender, HIV and AIDS; and Dr. Ruth
Bamela Engo, Chief Executive and co-founder of African Action on AIDS
in Cameroon.
The panelists discussed how the lack of support and protection for
mothers living with HIV is deeply tied to gender inequality. They also
suggested ways to address this critical issue. Tied to the discussion

On May 16th, the Research & Development team at Tibotec in Mechelen, Belgium, celebrated the fact that their latest compound for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, INTELENCE (also known as etravirine, TMC125) had received its first approvals in the US, Canada and Switzerland. Further approvals are anticipated later this year. INTELENCE is the first drug in its class (the so-called NNRTIs), that retains antiviral activity, even when the virus has become resistant to other drugs of the same class. |
