A Mother’s Love
"After the diagnosis, we ask ourselves, what then?", says a mothers2mothers site coordinator. This is only one of the issues Nozi battled with when she tested HIV positive in March 2005, already six months into her pregnancy. Through her involvement with m2m, she was appointed as a mentor mother and moved on to a site coordinator position. Here she tells her story and lets us in to her sacred space of confusion and distorted messages, and the discovery of clarity and truth.
"I thought of everyone I’ve ever known that was sick with AIDS, I could imagine myself getting thin, sick and eventually dying. I was sent to m2m by my counselor. With the support of m2m, I began to understand that being HIV positive is not about getting sick, but making positive choices. I delivered a boy on 7 June 2005 at Karl Bremer Hospital, he is 2 years old, and HIV negative. I was not scared to disclose my status to new women in the group, and the site coordinator then, saw that I was strong enough to look after myself, and give support to others. I now work as a site coordinator for mothers2mothers"
"Working for m2m has been a great pleasure, challenging and an experience in its own right. I enjoy helping mothers to change their lives for the better, it has been challenging working with mentors who are older than me, but it has improved my professional working relationships. I have been empowered in a way that today when I make a choice, I stick to it. I can talk openly to other people about my status.m2m has changed my relationship with people, I no longer isolate myself from others because of feeling ashamed because of my status."
"I have reached a high point while working for m2m. I was empowered and realised all the possibilities of a better life that are now coming to reality. I am a better mother to my son thanks to all the support from mothers2mothers."
