Our simple and effective Mentor Mother model is part of the Global Plan to reduce the number of new HIV infections among children by 90% and reduce the number of AIDS-related maternal deaths by 50%, by 2015. Also, successful nationalization of the Mentor Mother model will help achieve the Global Plan’s goals. By nationalization, we mean we are working to develop the capacity of local partners so they can deliver a Mentor Mother model. In other words, the goal is to integrate the Mentor Mother model into national health systems so that governments and local implementing partners can train and oversee their own Mentor Mothers, reaching more women in need. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton remarked at the launch of the Global Plan, “We have to learn from local successes. In the end…treatment programs of all kinds and all maternal and child health, these things are intensely personal. So, we need to do it in a way that is consistent with what local people tell us will work and be accepted. Groups like Partners in Health and mothers2mothers have shown us how critical it is to do that and how successful they have been because they did.” To find out more about the Global Plan, click here |
