South African Mentor Mother Denise and her daughter Lina are featured in one of the images in Annie Leibovitz’s new exhibit – “Women: New Portraits” – which opens in London on 16 January and is sponsored by UBS. They join dozens of other outstanding and inspiring women who have been photographed by Ms. Leibovitz, including Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi, comedian Amy Schumer, ballerina Misty Copeland, and singer Adele.

The exhibit is a continuation of a project that Ms. Leibovitz began over fifteen years ago when her most enduringly popular series of photographs – “Women” – was published in 1999.   It runs in London from 16 January to 7 February at Wapping Hydraulic Power Station. After that, the exhibit will travel to nine more cities over the next 12 months – Tokyo, San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico, Istanbul, Frankfurt, New York, and Zurich.

Ms. Leibovitz photographed Denise and her daughter two years ago when she was in Cape Town for a Vogue article on the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Denise is a former m2m client, who met the organisation when she was pregnant with her first child Lina and had just tested HIV positive. Her inspirational story of how m2m helped her overcome her HIV diagnosis and protect Lina from HIV infection, and then go onto support women newly diagnosed with HIV as a Mentor Mother, is captured in this moving video:
