m2m in Pictures

16 March 2017

We have been so fortunate to capture thousands of beautiful images of our country programmes in recent years – the latest from South Africa.

Often times words are not enough to explain how mothers2mothers’ (m2m) Mentor Mothers are empowering mothers and their families with health and hope each and every day in health centres, homes, and communities in sub-Saharan Africa. That’s why we are so grateful for the stunning and powerful images that Cape Town-based photographer Karin Schermbrucker has taken of our programme over the last several years.

Most recently, Karin and her husband Rob, a filmmaker, traveled to the South African provinces of Gauteng and Mpumulanga to capture m2m’s Mentor Mothers at work, providing education and support to mothers, fathers, children, and adolescents.

  • Community Mentor Mothers in Nelspruit, in the province of Mpumalanga, walking to reach women who, without active follow-up, might never come to the clinic for care.

  • Site Coordinator Irene Nkosi conducting an education session for pregnant women at Dark City Clinic in Kangala outside Pretoria.

  • A Mentor Mother from Dark City Clinic running a support group for new mothers.

  • Site Coordinator Grace Thage from Soshanguve Clinic, just outside Pretoria, working alongside a nurse to measure a pregnant mother’s middle-upper arm circumference (MUAC) to ensure she is healthy during her pregnancy.

  • Mentor Mothers from Soshanguve preparing to go out to the community to follow up with women who have missed their clinic appointments or who have not presented for care.

  • Peer Mentors from Soshanguve conducting an education session for adolescent girls and young women.

  • Early Childhood Household Stimulation (ECHS) Family Mentors leaving the local health facility to conduct household visits in the community of KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga.

  • ECHS Family Mentor Cynthia Nkosi, from Phola, Mpumalanga, conducting a small play group with toys made from household materials.

  • Toys made from household non-toxic recycled materials.

  • Refilwe Matjeni, an ECHS project Family Mentor, playing with one of her clients at a home in the rural town of KwaMhlanga.

  • Mentor Mother Beauty Mahlangu picking up her daughter from the day care centre after finishing a day of work at mothers2mothers.
