Cyclone Idai: Update on m2m teams in Mozambique and Malawi

23 March 2019

Update: As of 3pm GMT on Monday 25 March, we have managed to contact all staff in Mozambique affected by Cyclone Idai. No further fatalities have been reported, although we have received reports of a handful of injuries and illnesses. In addition, almost all of our team in the affected area have reported that their homes were either damaged or destroyed by the storm. We continue to monitor the situation and provide practical support as far as we are able to.

Saturday 23 March: Last week, a devastating storm brought rain, flooding, and high winds to a large area of Southern Africa, including Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe—two of m2m’s countries of operation were greatly impacted (Malawi and Mozambique). The UN’s World Food Programme is calling Cyclone Idai possibly the worst-ever weather-related disaster to hit the Southern hemisphere. (Please click on this link for more information: Read More.)

In Mozambique, the city of Beira and the surrounding area were hardest hit. We are saddened to report that one of our team members – a Mentor Mother based in Nhaconjo, Beira – has been confirmed as a fatality due to the storm. Our deepest condolences are with her family at this tragic time. At the request of the family, we will not be identifying our colleague by name.

In addition, we have received reports of at least two injuries, and a number of staff have reported partial or complete destruction of their homes. We are working to reach all of our team members and provide practical assistance in any way feasible. Many areas in and around Beira remain inaccessible and communications networks are patchy. Unfortunately, a small number of our field staff remain unaccounted for at this time. We are working to establish their whereabouts and safety; m2m is coordinating with local disaster relief efforts.

In Malawi, all of our staff are safely accounted for, although we have established that a number have been displaced by the storm. As in Mozambique, we are providing practical assistance.

Our thoughts are with colleagues, clients, and all those affected by the storm. Given that a number of health facilities and communities have been badly damaged, we know the effects of the cyclone will be felt for some time to come. Thanks to m2m Country Leadership and hard-working country teams, as always, their commitment to our mission means that our services for clients will resume in affected areas as soon as is practical.

We have initiated a fundraiser among m2m staff and Board Members, the proceeds of which will go directly to affected staff members.
