Louis Dreyfus Company Pub Quiz

ldc-pub-quiz For the third year running, Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) hosted their annual pub quiz in support of mothers2mothers. With 146 participants and 20 teams, it was a fabulous night of competition! The teams were tested on their knowledge of a wide range of subjects, such as mythology, geography, and the 2016 Olympics, and they were also treated to a special music round that was all done through songs! Following a great evening and a closely fought competition, the team ‘Bent Coppers’ scored 100, narrowly beating the ‘Nerves of Steel’ team by one point to take the evening.

The night proved to be a massive success, with participants raising CHF 4,500 in donations. LDC very kindly agreed to provide a corporate contribution of CHF 7,500, bringing the amount to be donated to CHF 12,000 – amazing! Thank you so much to all the participants, to Louis Dreyfus Company and to all everyone involved in making the night possible.

From the comfort of your home

HomeFundraisingImage During the holiday season, m2m partnered with LA-based supporter Sheila Gibbs who hosted a charming fundraiser in her home with 30 friends and colleagues. To Sheila’s surprise, she surpassed her $2,500 fundraising goal, raising over $3,000 to support m2m’s work in sub-Saharan Africa. m2m staff helped Sheila create a lovely gathering by first helping her identify a great group to invite and the best time of year to host the event. Once Sheila was ready to solidify plans, m2m staffers created an e-card invitation, tracked RSVPs, provided fundraising/communications materials, and planned day-of logistics. We also arrived early to help set up, welcome guests, collect donations, and help clean up. Sheila was thoroughly pleased how her guests supported m2m and hopes to host other home fundraisers in the future.

If you’re interested in hosting your home fundraiser on behalf of m2m, please contact Alexia Burton at dana.larkin@m2m.org (U.S.) or Alice Wilson at alice.wilson@m2m.org (U.K.). Please note, hosts typically cover all financial costs so that 100% of the donations can go to m2m programmes.

Who would you pick for your team…?

Charity pub quiz circle “The Milky Whey”, “The Great Grain Robbery,” “The Bean Counters,” and “The Wet Bandits” (to name a few of the creative team names) tested their brain power in the first annual LDC Geneva Charity Pub Quiz to raise funds for m2m! And what a fun night it was! The competitive and entertaining atmosphere was evident from the start, with teams whooping for joy for scoring high on the Food and Drink round, looking completely bemused on the Music round, and even challenging the Quiz Master in the Sports and Picture round (despite rules stating the contrary).

It was “The Carbonators” who triumphed in the end with an impressive score of 95.5, beating “The Sugar Daddys” by 5.5 points! Our thanks go out to the 101 Geneva employees (and their families and friends) who participated in the quiz, and to those who donated separately to m2m. CHF3 500 was raised through donations, which Louis Dreyfus Commodities has agreed to match, bringing the total amount raised for mothers2mothers to CHF7 000! A huge thanks to every single person involved and to Louis Dreyfus Commodities for the match funding, truly incredible (and fun) fundraising!

Khirma Trunk Sale!

Morton's circle image Khirma has fast become a household name in luxury designer handbags and accessories. Hailing from the East Village in New York, former fashion editor and brand consultant Khirma Eliazov launched her namesake label in 2009. Khirma’s handbags are the feature of many glossy magazine pages, worn by Blake Lively, Sienna Miller, and Jennifer Lopez to name a few. But in the west end’s very own Morton’s Club, Khirma and m2m’s fabulous supporter Ngozi Orji joined forces for a Trunk Sale, with a twist! A group of London’s very own fabulous women enjoyed a morning at Morton’s, admiring Khirma’s designs fresh from Paris Fashion Week. 20% of the morning’s purchases have been generously donated to m2m and we cannot thank Khirma and Ngozi for all their invaluable support.

ART FOR ZERO

Art 4 zero A group of Cycle to Zero participants hosted a fabulous art sale, ART FOR ZERO, raising funds for m2m’s inaugural cycle challenge through Swaziland and South Africa. The art was donated by artists from all over the world, including Violante Lodolo D’Oria, Tili De Arizmendi, Valentina Manochi, Gerladine Van Heemstra, Cruz Jurado, Cristina Melotti, Georgina Nuñez, and Maria Dagher. Tough Mudder!

Tm girls I An incredible group of friends; Elena Parling, Emma Waldrom, Kate Pienaar, and Georgie and Sophie Rollings, joined forces to take part in Tough Mudder, a grueling series of hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle race – mud run events designed by the British Special Forces to challenge the toughest of the tough. They underwent this incredible challenge in support of two charities of their choice. m2m is incredibly grateful to be one of these, joining GEMs charity, a local Leicestershire charity that that raises money specifically for the Oncology unit in Leicester Royal Hospital.

The fabulous group was introduced to m2m by a good friend and incredibly long standing and valued supporter of ours, Josefina de Achaval. Donations have already soared above their target of £500 to a staggering £1,362.50. Continue to support the girls and their amazing fundraising journey by donating to their Virgin Giving Page. We are unbelievably grateful for all their support!

Martin’s Marathon

Martin Heavens Marathon image Martin Heavens ran 26.2 miles to raise funds for m2m as a participant in the Edinburgh (Scotland) Marathon! Martin first came to know m2m in 2011 during a one-year consultancy with Bain & Company in Johannesburg.

While there, he volunteered to support the roll out of m2m’s Active Client Follow-Up (ACFU) initiative, designed to help site staff improve client retention by using mobile technology to follow up with women who miss key medical appointments. He also visited m2m sites in Khayelitsha, Cape Town’s largest township. The Mentor Mothers he met during these site visits, and what he learned about m2m’s work through the ACFU initiative, inspired Martin to raise awareness and funds for the organisation when he returned back home to Bain & Co. in the U.K.

Martin’s commitment to run the marathon in  support of m2m demonstrates a truly incredible way in which one individual can create and inspire change. So far Martin has raised an amazing £1,181.47 for m2m! You still have the chance to show your support by sharing and donating!

Follow in Philip’s footsteps

Phil Jackson Kili Marathon “Moving from England to a life in Tanzania, I can really see and believe just how effective m2m’s work here in sub-Saharan Africa is in tackling stigma, empowering women and ensuring babies are born HIV negative.”

Philip Jackson was in need of an adventure and a change of pace from his working life in the U.K. So he moved from his home in the British Yorkshire Moors to one of Africa’s most spectacular countries, Tanzania, taking a teaching post at Isamilo International School in Mwanza on the banks of Lake Victoria. An adrenalin junkie through and through, Philip began challenging himself through a series of marathons soon after arriving in Africa. Upon learning about the work m2m is doing to eliminate paediatric AIDS and promote healthy motherhood in sub-Saharan Africa, Philip’s marathon pastime took on new purpose.

So far in support of m2m, Philip has run the Mwanza half marathon, the Zanzibar half marathon, and the Serengeti Marathon. Most recently, he took on the Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania, which is run under the watchful eye of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world. Donate to Philip’s Virgin Giving page and support the incredible challenges he is undertaking on behalf of m2m!
