Celebrating Wonder Women
Mother’s Day events in the U.S. and U.K. celebrated the amazing HIV-positive mothers employed by m2m as Mentor Mothers.
In Los Angeles on Saturday, 6 May, m2m held a fashion bazaar to raise money to help m2m’s Wonder Women – HIV-positive mothers employed by m2m as Mentor Mothers – reach more women and families with lifesaving education and support. The event was held at Citizen, a Beverly Hills hotspot, owned by long-time m2m supporters Debbie and Glen Bickerstaff. Guests nibbled hors d’oeuvres by Chef Scott Howard, had their nails glammed by nail artists from MiniLuxe, and shopped for an array of fashion and accessories from cutting edge LA-based designers who generously donated proceeds to benefit m2m. The event was curated by fashion and luxury industry veteran, Lionel Geneste.
Special guest Annie Lennox delivered short remarks to the crowd of shoppers on the challenges that HIV-positive women in Africa face, explaining that “in most parts of Africa, women have no access to knowledge, medical care, or sexual reproductive health services… As a mother myself, I am passionate about fundamental human rights for women and girls to have access to these kinds of services. Mothers should not die because they are HIV positive and the babies should be born free of the virus so they can have a healthy start right at the beginning of their lives.” She added that “mothers2mothers creates this special opportunity. They have a first-class track record. 98% of babies born in mothers2mothers care are born HIV negative.”
